Possibly Ill-behaved Posteriors in Econometric Models

چکیده
Highly non-elliptical posterior distributions may occur in several econometric models, in particular, when the likelihood is allowed to dominate and information in the data is weak. This latter feature occurs frequently in empirical econometric analysis. Well-known cases are: instrumental variable models with weak instruments like the income-education models; vector autoregressive models with co-integration restrictions, widely used for the analysis of macroeconomic and financial time series; and mixture processes where one component is nearly non-identified like business cycle models with recessions and expansions as components of the mixture. We explain the issue of highly non-elliptical posteriors in the context of a simple model for the effect of education on income using data from the wellknown Angrist and Krueger (1991) study and discuss how a so-called Information Matrix or Jeffreys’ prior may be used as a ‘regularization prior’ that in combination with the likelihood function yields posteriors with desirable properties. We also illustrate that the IV model and the vector autoregressive model with co-integration restrictions have a similar mathematical structure and thus this leads to similar posterior shapes. In order to perform a Bayesian posterior analysis using simulation techniques in these models, one has to face the issue of finding a good candidate density ∗Preliminary versions of this paper were presented at the 2007 ISI Conference in Lisbon, the 2008 MCMSki meeting in Bormio, and at the University of Montreal, Harvard University and Louisiana State. On Reliable and Efficient Simulation for Possibly Ill-behaved Econometric Posteriors: Some Experiments with Neural Network Sampling with Applications to Iv Models, Mixture Processes and Option Evaluations
It is shown that artificial neural networks may serve as perfect candidate/ importance densities in Markov chain Monte Carlo and Importance Sampling methods for two reasons. First, artificial neural network functions possess a universal approximation property. Second, it is also easy to sample pseudo random draws from such networks. Given this existence property, several procedures are presente...
متن کاملLeast Absolute Deviation Estimation of Linear Econometric Models : A Literature Review
I. Introduction: The Least Squares method of estimation of parameters of linear (regression) models performs well provided that the residuals (disturbances or errors) are well behaved (preferably normally or near-normally distributed and not infested with large size outliers) and follow Gauss-Markov assumptions. However, models with the disturbances that are prominently non-normally distributed...
متن کاملParameter estimation of nonlinear econometric models using particle swarm optimization
Global optimization is an essential component of econometric modeling. Optimization in econometrics is often difficult due to irregular cost functions characterized by multiple local optima. The goal of this paper is to apply a relatively new stochastic global technique, particle swarm optimization, to the well-known but difficult disequilibrium problem. Because of its co-operative nature and b...
متن کاملBayesian Estimation of Continuous-Time Finance Models
A new Bayesian method is proposed for the analysis of discretely sampled diffusion processes. The method, which is termed high frequency augmentation (HFA), is a simple numerical method that is applicable to a wide variety of univariate or multivariate diffusion and jump-diffusion processes. It is furthermore useful when observations are irregularly observed, when one or more elements of the mu...
متن کاملMinimum Divergence
This paper studies the Minimum Divergence (MD) class of estimators for econometric models specified through moment restrictions. We show that MD estimators can be obtained as solutions to a computationally tractable optimization problem. This problem is similar to the one solved by the Generalized Empirical Likelihood estimators of Newey and Smith (2004), but it is equivalent to it only for a s...
